About the Musical
The hit Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof now comes to the Overseas School of Colombo. The original musical based on the book Tevye and his Daughters by Joseph Stein with music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick as a huge hit in 1964 and ran for a record-setting 3242 performances.
The setting is Tsarist Russia, in 1905, a time and place of great political and social tension and anti-semitism. The play revolves around the poor milkman Tevye, his five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish tradition while outside influences encroach upon their lives. As each of his daughters get married, they deviate a little further each time from the tradition Tevye follows, an which he believes enables stability in tubulent times.
Although there is a plot, the play is at heart indulgence in fun with singing and dancing involving some of the word famous musical numbers such as Matchmaker, If I Were a Rich man, Sunrise, Sunset, and Do you Love Me?
This much-loved musical is now being taken on by the eager students of the high-quality IB school OSC, and is sure to be a very great visual and musical experience for the family that will surely be more than worth your time.
